Mesothelioma Treatment
For your convenience, we have consolidated mesothelioma treatment information for your review.
Navelbine
Navelbine is a plant alkaloid used primarily for non-small cell lung cancer as well as Hodgkin’s disease and cancers of the breast and ovaries. Navelbine is a clear, intravenously fluid that may be administered orally or intravenously.
Navelbine inhibits the development of cell structures inside tumors, causing apoptosis (“cell death”). Used in [...]
Onconase
Onconase, also known as Ranpirnase and P-30 protein, is derived from the eggs and early embryonic stem cells of the northern leopard frog. It is one of the newer and currently more promising of chemotherapy drugs used in the treatment of cancer.
Onconase is an enzyme that works in conjunction with others in order to breakdown RNA, preventing the reproduction process in cancer cells. Current studies show that Onconase can be used to kill mesothelioma cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues. This is due to the fact that it is designed to attach itself to specific receptors on cancer cells which are not found in normal cells.
Gemcitabine
Gemcitabine is a newer chemotherapy drug, marketed by Eli Lilly and Company under the brand name GEMzar©. This drug acts by replaces one of the building blocks of nucleic acids during DNA replication in cancer cells, preventing tumor growth.
Carboplatin
Carboplatin is a chemotherapy drug that has primarily been used to treat cancer of the ovaries, lung, head and neck. Coming on the market in the late 1980s, carboplatin has popularity among oncologists because of its relatively few and milder side effects compared with the much older drug from which it is derived, cisplatin. Nausea is more easily controlled in patients receiving carboplatin, remains in the system for a much longer period (retention half-life is over thirty hours), and it has proven to be effective for cancers that are resistant to cisplatin, including germ-line cell, small and non-small cell lung, ovary, and bladder cancers, as well as acute leukemia and most recently, testicular cancer.
Cisplatin
Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug that was approved by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in 1978 and is used to treat patients suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma. Cisplatin is administered when surgical procedures are not an option, and it is often used in combination with other chemotherapy drugs, including Alimta®. Manufactured by Bristol Myers Squibb, Cisplatin is also used to treat ovarian and lung cancer and is a highly effective method of mesothelioma treatment that is often recommended by oncologists.
Alimta®
Alimta® is the very first chemotherapy drug to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat patients suffering from malignant pleural mesothelioma cancer. Also known as Pemetrexed, Alimta® is administered to mesothelioma patients who are unable to undergo surgical procedures to remove cancerous tissue.
Developed in 2000, Alimta® has [...]
Mesothelioma Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is one of the most widely used treatments for cancers of all sorts. Literally meaning “chemical therapy”, it was developed in the 1940s and, today, more than 100 chemo drugs are on the market.
Chemotherapy uses certain medications to kill cancer cells and stop them from multiplying. A number of different chemo drugs can be used to treat mesothelioma specifically, though some have been discovered to be more successful than others. Often, chemo is used for meso patients in conjunction with other standard therapies such as radiation. It may also be used after tumor-removing surgery to eliminate any cancer that remains after the procedure is complete.
Mesothelioma Brachytherapy
Also known as “internal radiation therapy”, brachytherapy is a form of radiation treatment that targets a tumor or the area around the tumor with concentrated radiation that is implanted directly at the affected region of the body. Often used for mesothelioma patients, it kills fewer healthy cells than traditional radiation and also causes fewer side effects.
Mesothelioma Radiation
Radiation therapy is one of the oldest forms of cancer treatment available though it has consistently gotten more sophisticated as the years have passed. The techniques now available to deliver the radiation have resulted in more targeted therapy and better results. For mesothelioma patients, radiation is often used together with chemotherapy or may be used after surgery designed to remove as much of the cancer as possible. It may also be used to relieve some of the symptoms of the disease and make the patient more comfortable.
Mesothelioma Pleurocentesis
Mesothelioma patients experience many uncomfortable symptoms associated with their disease. One of the most debilitating is the build-up of fluid in the pleura space around the lungs. This collection of fluid makes it very difficult to breathe and also can cause severe pain. It greatly impacts the quality of life for the patient and can make it difficult to do every day tasks.
